Just Another Number?

Just Another Number?

In a great big world with billions of people scattered all about, it is very easy to find yourself overwhelmed with life and feelings of insignificance. It is easy to lose hope, to lose a sense of meaning, to forget how special you really are. You may be asking right now, “Who me—special?” I feel so insignificant, how can I be special?

You walk out on a dark, cloudless night; look up into the sky and before you a gorgeous tapestry of trillions of stars light the sky. The Scripture says: “God made two great lights—the larger one to govern the day, and the smaller one to govern the night. He also made the stars.” (Genesis 1:16 NLT). You begin to think about a GOD big enough to speak such beauty—such majesty—into existence. You begin to find yourself becoming even smaller and more insignificant than before.

But, GOD’s plan didn’t stop there. Certainly, He created all the beauty; He created all the majestic scenery around about us. He created a great diversity of living things and scattered them all across the earth. But, GOD’s plan was still incomplete. The Scripture tells us GOD had a crowning achievement in mind. All of these other things were created so that this soon coming “crowning achievement” could enjoy it all and rule over it.

Consider that crowning moment as you grapple with thoughts of your own insignificance: “God said, ‘Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.’ So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them” (Genesis 1:26-27 NLT).

You are precious, vital and significant to GOD. He knows you in a special way. He who counts the stars and call them each by name (Psalm 147:4) knows the exact number of hairs on your head (Luke 12:7). He personally put you together according to His plan in your mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13); He knew you before you were born and gave you a reason for being, significance and purpose (Jeremiah 1:5).

You are a special person with special meaning and a very special reason for being. GOD calls you His child and looks favorably upon you as a very special creation. You are a person of significance!

Scripture Reading: “You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me!” (Psalm 139:13-18 NLT)

Prayer: Father, it is so easy to become overwhelmed by life—easy to become a victim of life’s clutter and simply to forget that this is not really what You designed my life to be. I try to find some semblance of significance for my being but in human eyes, I seem like just another number. It can really get me down. LORD, help me to not look down but to look up and to realize that no matter what others in this world may say about me, I am special to You! You know me; You love me; You designed me for a reason. I am not just another number to You. Father, help me to understand all this and to learn to live my life as the person You have designed me to be. Thank you, LORD, for caring and loving me!…in Jesus’ name…AMEN!
